April 2, 1978 began like any other Sunday on the sleepy scrap of land known as Bell Island. It’s few scattered residents were waking up and starting their days, when suddenly an enormous blast from an unknown source sent a shockwave through the morning’s stillness. A boom that could be felt and heard rattled the landscape, damaging buildings and causing appliances and television sets to explode within people’s homes. Eyewitnesses reported seeing strange orbs and beams of light in the sky and hearing a high, buzzing sound immediately following the blast. Others reported visible metallic looking dust in the air.

The sound of the two to four second blast echoed across an area of 100 kilometers. The locals, concerned about everyone’s well-being as well as the cause of the damage, began to search the island for answers. No source for the explosion could be found, however, leaving both the island’s inhabitants and the scientific community at large stunned. What could have been behind such a rapid and destructive event? Some unforeseen natural disaster? A collapse of the highly-concentrated iron mines beneath the island? Or, more ominously, was it the effect of some new kind of magnetic technology?

Uncovered using cosmic rays, Egyptologists recently announced the stunning discovery of a mysterious void within Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza. The secret chamber is the first major structure revealed inside the ancient wonder since the 1800s. Scientists are just beginning to probe the space, and it remains unclear what lies within…

Late on the night of June 5th, 1944, the German army headquarters in occupied France begin to receive reports of enemy parachutists drifting from the sky and landing east of Caen, across a swath of northwestern France that included Coutances, Valognes, and Saint-Lo. Assuming that the parachutists signaled the first wave of a more massive push by the Allies, the German brass ordered their 7th Army unit to increase their numbers and be prepared for an all-out invasion.

However, General Hans Speidel then decreased the level of alert once subsequent reports began to trickle with a curious addendum: so far, all of the parachutists that had touched down had turned out to be cloth dummies. The Allies’ top-secret Operation Fortitude was in full swing, and Germany was belatedly realizing that it had prepared to do battle with the world’s largest phantom army… one that would never show up and one that never really existed at all.

It was a “most unusual story” so difficult to believe that the U.S. Air Force felt obligated to turn the event into a training video to document “aviation history.” Marked “Official Use Only,” and to be shown only to “Authorized Personnel,” “Flight Without a Fin” showed a jet-powered bomber flying with its tail and vertical stabilizer sheared clean off. The video captured extensive real-life footage of the aircraft in flight, and the Directorate of Aerospace Safety hoped that it would “enhance pilot understanding of B-52 flight characteristics and heighten appreciation of its capabilities.”

In early February 1961, two Italian radio operators, the Judica-Cordiglia brothers, reportedly received an extraordinary transmission. The brothers had spent the previous year holed up in a makeshift listening station in an old German bunker with their equipment pointed towards the stars, hoping to listen in on the early space expeditions being mounted by both the United States and Soviet Union at the time. The incoming broadcasts of February 1961 were unusual, though, and featured muffled gasping noises and what sounded like a human being struggling to breathe. Another signal, a faint pulse, was also heard shortly after. The brothers played the recordings for their father, a cardiologist, who believed that the soft pulse was a failing human heartbeat. If that were true, it would mean that someone, the Soviets or the Americans, had successfully launched a man into space for the first time and that the brave pioneer likely never returned alive...
