April 2, 1978 began like any other Sunday on the sleepy scrap of land known as Bell Island. It’s few scattered residents were waking up and starting their days, when suddenly an enormous blast from an unknown source sent a shockwave through the morning’s stillness. A boom that could be felt and heard rattled the landscape, damaging buildings and causing appliances and television sets to explode within people’s homes. Eyewitnesses reported seeing strange orbs and beams of light in the sky and hearing a high, buzzing sound immediately following the blast. Others reported visible metallic looking dust in the air.

The sound of the two to four second blast echoed across an area of 100 kilometers. The locals, concerned about everyone’s well-being as well as the cause of the damage, began to search the island for answers. No source for the explosion could be found, however, leaving both the island’s inhabitants and the scientific community at large stunned. What could have been behind such a rapid and destructive event? Some unforeseen natural disaster? A collapse of the highly-concentrated iron mines beneath the island? Or, more ominously, was it the effect of some new kind of magnetic technology?

In January 1988, CIA satellites captured imagery of bizarre man-made symbols carved into the earth in Laos. In Xam Neua, a northeastern town near the border with Vietnam that literally translates to “northern swamp,” the large letters “USA” were visibly hacked into a rice paddy, along with a nearby letter K made out of piles of rice stalks. The letter K was a known distress signal among U.S. pilots during the Vietnam War, an intriguing suggestion that this was the work of an American still surviving behind enemy lines long after the Vietnam War had ended. The presence of these symbols raised an interesting and difficult question for the U.S. government: was there proof that American soldiers were still being held as prisoners in Laos, and if so, how could they possibly go about getting them out?

For centuries, a peak in the Ural Mountains of Siberia has been known to the indigenous Mansi people as Kholat Syakhl, or the “Mountain of Doom.” Its extreme, isolated, and hostile climate raised the specter of doom for anyone bold enough to attempt its slopes.

Given the danger, it should have been little surprise then, when in 1959 nine young hikers were found buried under the deep snow. At first glance, the incident could have easily been chalked up to an avalanche or freak storm. As investigators began looking further into the details of their ill-fated journey, however, it became evident that the mountain may be hiding an even darker secret behind its perilous reputation. Unexplained radiation readings, sightings of strange lights in the sky, and evidence of an unknown “compelling natural force” quickly turned the incident into one of the most mysterious unsolved cases in the world.

The wreckage of the massive Airship Italia’s cabin lay strewn across the frozen tundra, along with nine men from its crew, some in critical condition. Meanwhile, the aircraft’s balloon component, loosed from the cabin by the impact of the crash, drifted away in the violent Arctic wind with several of crewmembers still aboard. The airship’s captain, the Italian pilot and General Umberto Nobile, lay helpless on the large ice pack, having just moments before watched the crash through a porthole window in the Italia’s cabin. His arm and leg were broken, and he felt a tightness in his chest, assuming he was done for.

The other survivors who were healthy enough to walk scavenged the crash site for supplies, and miraculously located two pre-packed survival kits and the small wireless transmitter they had brought along in case they needed to broadcast a distress signal back to Norway, where they had launched from. Using the materials they recovered - food, tents, weapons, and warm clothes - the survivors from the ship’s cabin set up a small camp and hunkered down to rest and prepare for the long haul on the drifting ice pack as they waited for rescue from their doomed attempt to reach the North Pole…
